Thriller Movies Opening Sequences

Thriller movies

What is the point of a film opening sequence?

The purpose of the opening scene of a movie is to introduce the characters and give you a general notion of what the story is about. By using a theme or genre that appeals to or piques the audiences' attention, this further engages the viewers.

Conventions of an opening sequences?

Conventionally, an opening sequence gives you a quick overview of the plot or theme of the movie as well as an introduction to each character.

Analysis

Reservoir Dogs

Seven

How does it introduce the characters and settings?

With the use of editing and slow-motion walking, each of the primary characters is presented to the audience. In each of the concluding sequences, we see one of the men severely hurt as the other man tries to get assistance.

A strange montage that focuses on a person writing a book, sewing fabric, and shaving their dead skin.

How does it introduce the theme and narrative?

A subject of violence and friendship is briefly presented, and we can see how this foreshadows the sudden issues the group of well-dressed men would later encounter.

There is hardly any standard storytelling either the plot or the characters. This illustrates how the ideas might be rather grim, though.

What technical language does it use and to what effect?

·      Mise-en-scene

·      Camera language

·      Editing

·      Sound

A few fade outs are present, the introduction nearly has a "sitcom" feel to it because of the title and how it enters the scene and it has a slow pace.

What information about its production companies does it give?

Quentin Tarantion, Lawrence Bender

The information seven gives about its production companies is that the end of the trailer it names a production company which is New Line Cinema.

How does it engage the audiences ? (enigmas, clues, techniques)

The tempo in the first scene is quite leisurely, which shocks the spectator when language and visual contrast are used abruptly in the last scene.

The eerie and creepy montage in the opening segments draws the audience in.
